Short Interest

Short selling means borrowing shares and selling them, betting the price will fall so you can buy them back cheaper. Short interest is the total number of shares currently sold short.

  • Short Float % — Shares sold short as a percentage of total float. Above 20% is considered high.
  • Days to Cover — Short interest divided by average daily volume. Higher = harder for shorts to exit.
  • Short Squeeze — When a heavily-shorted stock rises, forcing shorts to buy back (covering), which drives the price higher.
  • Short interest is reported bi-monthly by exchanges and available in real-time from some data providers.
