RSI (Relative Strength Index)

The Relative Strength Index (RSI) is a momentum oscillator that measures the speed and magnitude of recent price changes on a scale of 0-100. Developed by J. Welles Wilder Jr. in 1978, it remains one of the most widely used technical indicators.

RSI FormulaRSI = 100 - (100 / (1 + RS)) where RS = Average Gain / Average Loss over 14 periods
  • Above 70 — Overbought. Stock may be due for a pullback.
  • Below 30 — Oversold. Stock may be due for a bounce.
  • 50 Line — Acts as support in uptrends and resistance in downtrends.
  • Divergence — When RSI moves opposite to price, it can signal a reversal.
